Staying Busy
Believe it or not you can actually run out of things to do in London. When you are on a budget and you don't drink or party the city can be a boring place once you have seen all the museums and tourist spots. I definitly have not sampled all London has to offer but my point is this: if anyone has any good book they have read or any suggestions on time fillers while Nate is in school I would love to hear them! I signed up for a library card and I found a few art classes that I'm going to take. I also am taking the time while the weather is nice to freak watch in Hyde park. It is a whole new world here and I love it. It just gets boring when I run out of books to read on the tube.

My favorite author is Maeve Binchy. She is Irish, so I would imagine her novels are in the local library. She has quite a few. My favorite is Echoes, but the rest are really good too. She is th author of that nineties movie Circle of Friends that Minnie Driver debuted in. It is is the raciest of her books with a tender love scene that tops out at a mild PG 13, I think...it's been several years since I read that one. Anyway that is my suggestion. My other suggestion is write a novel. My friend wrote one that is good, and that would be a great way to use time. Very J.K. Rowling, writing while sitting on the tube... Sounds like fun over there, we miss you guys! Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeletei've only read one of maeve binchy's books. i think it was tara road. i'll have to check out echoes. i'm reading 1776, by David McCullough. its really good, but is more historical than a novel. One of my favorite southern books is "cold Sassy Tree" by Olive Ann Burns. its a big one that we read in high school out here, but i wonder if that is the case outside the south. anyway, it is a great story. that's all that is coming to mind right now. let us know if you read a really good one!
ReplyDeleteI guess we readers are responding, so here goes my reading suggestions. I have more books than I have good sense. I like mystery type books. One of my new favorite authors is David Baldacci. His newest is just off the press: "The Collectors." If you haven't read all the Harry Potters, that's a good place to read good English writing. Dick Francis, who is Sir Dick Francis, writes mystery books that all have something in the book about horse racing. I have all my friends here, 3 English teachers, converted to his writing. Any of his are good. His newest one is his first one in 6 years, and I bought it at a bookstore in London while I was there. It's called "Under Orders." I read 1776 this year, and loved it. I hope you have happy reading and pass the time well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestions. I have read quite a few of Jodi Picoult's books and have really liked those. I have read Tara Road as well but I will look into some others. Lisa, I'm working on the royal pictures for Halle. I may just send her a postcard with the queen on it. We shall see. We miss you guys too and can't wait to see you if you come at Christmas.
